When I was 15½ I traded in my candy striper uniform at a local hospital for a white smock, and I took a job in the histology department of that hospital. I was trained to assist the pathologist with the gross examination of the specimens that came in that day - including the abortions. I learned to identify fetal and placental tissue - and I learned how to suppress all of the feelings I had about what I was doing.
After 7 years of this job, I had a breakdown and spent 3 months in a mental health unit. My life was a mess - and no one understood what was happening to me - because I rarely talked about it. I told a small home Bible study my testimony, and one of the pastors remembered it when the church was approached about helping a crisis pregnancy center open in El Cajon - he thought I’d be perfect as a liaison - and I thought he was crazy! BUT - God spoke clearly to me through Isaiah 54 -
“Sing, O barren, You who have not borne! Break forth into singing, and cry aloud,You who have not labored with child! For more are the children of the desolate than the children of the married woman,” says the Lord. Enlarge the place of your tent, and let them stretch out the curtains of your dwellings; do not spare; lengthen your cords, and strengthen your stakes. For you shall expand to the right and to the left, and your descendants will inherit the nations, and make the desolate cities inhabited. Do not fear, for you will not be ashamed; neither be disgraced, for you will not be put to shame; for you will forget the shame of your youth, and will not remember the reproach of your widowhood anymore. For your Maker is your husband, the Lord of hosts is His name; and your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel; He is called the God of the whole earth. For the Lord has called you like a woman forsaken and grieved in spirit, like a youthful wife when you were refused, says your God.”
After reading this I KNEW what God wanted from me - and I chose to follow Him into unchartered and terrifying territory. I went out to the center in El Cajon and felt that God was saying that the CHURCH needed to be the place of refuge for women - that the CHURCH needed to take a stand on abortion and stop treating it like it was a political issue. Fortunately, this church - Horizon Christian Fellowship - took up that challenge and allowed us to have an office on campus, and we built the ministry from the ground up.
It was ground breaking work - we were the only center in a church in the County - and one of only a few in the Country. We were at the very beginning of the crisis pregnancy center movement. There were no training manuals - we had to rely on the LORD for guidance and direction - and He has been faithful! Since that time we have grown tremendously - we offer free pregnancy test, abortion education, parenting classes, post abortion counseling, and natural family planning instruction. We have helped train leaders in Romania, Israel and India, and we currently have centers in Russia and Zambia.
I have to be honest and tell you that I was pretty naive at the time - I really thought that we would win the battle - that people would see the truth about abortion - and that Roe v Wade would be overturned. I had no idea that 31 years later we would still be fighting that battle. When the first Planned Parenthood videos were released this summer, I had hope that THIS would be the time - this would certainly wake up the church - that we would have people standing in line to volunteer and support us in our fight to preserve life and protect women from abortion - but that hasn’t happened.
At the same time Planned Parenthood is being exposed, Pregnancy Centers in California are facing the implementation of AB775 - the bill that would require us to provide a referral to every client to Social Services for a free abortion.
While we’re winning small victories across the country, there are still over 1.2 million abortions performed annually - over 15,000 of them are performed in San Diego County. That is simply unacceptable!
To that end, Silent Voices wants to provide even more services to women - to meet them where they are, and not wait for them to find us! Hopefully you all had the opportunity to see the Save the Stork van out front - isn’t it amazing? We want to purchase and license one of these vans. This would allow us to provide ultrasounds to women who are abortion vulnerable - and it will expand our reach in the County. In order to do this we have to raise our income substantially - AND we have to have more volunteers! We need a doctor and nurses to volunteer. We need people to serve in the office so that Steph and I are freed up to go out with the van. We need help - we need YOUR help. There’s a postcard for each of you on the table - we hope you’ll take it and share it with someone. Maybe you know someone who is a doctor - or you know a nurse - or you know someone who might want to help underwrite the cost of the purchase.
Deitrich Bonhoeffer said “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.” Proverbs 24:11 says “Deliver those who are drawn toward death, and hold back those stumbling to the slaughter.” What will YOU do to save a life?
